World Cup Nights: Haaland floors Ancelotti's Brazil, England raid the Azteca with ten men. Portugal-Spain derby tonight

A brutal night for the giants. At MetLife an Erling Haaland brace knocks out Ancelotti's Brazil (1-2) and sends Norway to the first quarter-final in their history. At the Azteca, England beat Mexico 3-2 with a lightning Bellingham double and hold on with ten men after Quansah's red. The quarter-final will be Norway-England. From tonight, Italian time, it's the Iberian derby Portugal-Spain and USA-Belgium.

It began at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, the setting for the tournament's biggest shock. Brazil started brightly and even won a penalty on 12', but Bruno Guimaraes was hypnotised by Orjan Nyland: spot-kick missed, and the game turned. In the second half Erling Haaland took over: on 80' he powered home a diving header from Schjelderup's cross for 1-0, then on 90' he curled a left-footer from the edge that squirmed under Danilo. Neymar pulled one back from the spot deep in stoppage time (90'+7'), but too late: it finished 1-2. Norway reach the last eight for the first time ever, while Brazil exit in the round of 16 for the first time since 1986. The brace takes Haaland to seven goals, level at the top of the scoring chart with Mbappe and Messi.

The night's second act was even more spectacular. At the Estadio Azteca, in a searing atmosphere, England floored Mexico with a Jude Bellingham double in just two minutes: a header from Saka's cross on 36', then a close-range finish off Kane on 38'. Julian Quinones reopened it on 42', but on 54' the Three Lions were down to ten after a straight red for Jarell Quansah, punished by VAR for a studs-up challenge on Gallardo. It wasn't enough: Harry Kane made it three from the penalty spot on 60', and despite Raul Jimenez's penalty on 69' England clung to a 3-2, dragged over the line by an inspired Pickford. For the first time, Mexico lose at home at a World Cup.

The quarter-final bracket is taking shape: Saturday brings Norway-England, while Thursday is France-Morocco. In the Brazil camp it is already time for reckoning: 'I don't think this is the end, but the start of a new cycle,' said Carlo Ancelotti, convinced his side 'deserved to win'. On the other side, the Scandinavian fairytale: Haaland is driving a Norway higher than ever and, alongside Mbappe and Messi still in the race, is a live contender for the Golden Boot.

But the beauty is that the last 16 isn't done. From tonight, Italian time, the bracket completes. It starts at 21:00 with the Iberian derby Portugal-Spain in Arlington, a clash worth half a Cup between two of the most fancied sides. At 02:00 the co-hosts United States welcome Belgium in Seattle, without the suspended Balogun. And the round closes tomorrow: Tuesday Argentina-Egypt at 18:00, with Messi chasing big goals, and Switzerland-Colombia at 22:00.

On we go, one night at a time. See you tomorrow at dawn.
