World Cup Nights: Merino's 91st-minute strike ends Ronaldo's World Cup, Belgium crush the USA. Argentina-Egypt and Switzerland-Colombia close the last 16 tonight
A night of farewells and statements. In Arlington, Spain edge out Portugal through a Mikel Merino goal in the first minute of stoppage time (0-1) and bring the curtain down on Cristiano Ronaldo's final World Cup, the captain leaving in tears. In Seattle, Belgium rout co-hosts United States 4-1, driven by a De Ketelaere brace, on a night poisoned by the Balogun affair. The quarter-final will be Spain-Belgium. From tonight, Italian time, Argentina-Egypt and Switzerland-Colombia complete the round of 16.
It began at Arlington's AT&T Stadium, where a farewell carried the weight of a final. Spain and Portugal cancelled each other out for almost the entire match: La Roja wasted a golden chance through Oyarzabal, sent clean through by Dani Olmo, while Portugal rattled the woodwork with a deflected Nuno Mendes drive. It looked like a night of regrets, until the first minute of second-half stoppage time brought Mikel Merino: fed in behind by substitute Ferran Torres, the Arsenal midfielder beat Diogo Costa at the near post for the 0-1 that means the quarter-finals. Spain reach six successive clean sheets — no side had ever managed that in World Cup history — and are yet to concede at the tournament. For Cristiano Ronaldo, it is the end: at 41 he bows out of his sixth and final World Cup in tears, the only Portugal player to register a shot on target.
The verdict in Seattle was far more emphatic. At Lumen Field, Belgium dismantled the United States 4-1. Charles De Ketelaere opened on 9', ghosting in onto Raskin's through-ball; but on 31' Malik Tillman levelled for the hosts with a deflected free-kick, after Balogun had won the foul. The parity lasted just two minutes: on 33' De Ketelaere climbed highest to head home Trossard's cross for his brace. In the second half a mix-up from goalkeeper Freese teed up Hans Vanaken's 3-1 (57'), before Romelu Lukaku sealed it on 90'+3'. Belgium fly into the quarter-finals; the co-hosts USA go out in the last 16 in front of their own fans.
Two stories dominate the morning after. The first is Ronaldo's goodbye: 'It's normal, sad, to leave the World Cup like this. But I gave it my all, I gave my best, and I leave with a clear conscience,' said the Portugal captain, keeping every option open on his future. The second is the diplomatic row around Folarin Balogun: sent off on 1 July against Bosnia and therefore suspended, the American striker took the field anyway after President Donald Trump phoned Gianni Infantino to request a review of the red card. FIFA suspended the ban, UEFA spoke of a 'red line crossed', and Belgium said they were 'astonished'. It changed nothing on the scoreboard, but the case will run and run.
Yet the last 16 isn't done. From tonight, Italian time, the bracket completes. At 18:00 in Atlanta, Lionel Messi's Argentina face Egypt, the reigning world champions chasing a ticket to the quarters; at 22:00 in Vancouver, Switzerland meet Colombia. The winners will clash on Sunday in Kansas City in the last quarter-final on the schedule. The rest of the bracket is already set: Thursday France-Morocco in Boston, Friday Spain-Belgium in Los Angeles, Saturday Norway-England in Miami.
On we go, one night at a time. See you tomorrow at dawn.
