Three teams on top, Juve without a keeper

Roma, Inter and Lazio are all on 13 points after five rounds: Serie A still has no owner. And while Juventus lose Grabara to a cruciate ligament tear, the afternoon brings the Madrid derby, Fulham-United and a Classique between two struggling sides.

Matchday five opened with a draw that felt like a statement: Roma and Inter shared the spoils 2-2 at the Olimpico, Koné scoring twice in the first half and Lautaro Martinez answering with a brace of his own after the break. Chivu summed up the night this way: "the second half was good, I said everything I had to say about the first at half-time" (ANSA Calcio). Earlier, Lazio had won 2-0 at Venezia through Zaccagni and Noslin, Cagliari had taken all three points in Udine with a Daniel Maldini goal, and Bologna-Torino finished 1-1; on Friday night Monza beat Sassuolo 2-1.

Abroad, the weekend has already left its marks. Arsenal collapsed 3-0 at Brighton ("let it be a lesson", Arteta told ANSA), De Zerbi's Tottenham lost 3-2 at home to Aston Villa and, according to Corriere dello Sport, the manager publicly criticised his own players. Barcelona won 3-1 in Seville and remain perfect, Bayern thrashed Union Berlin 7-0 yet still trail Borussia Dortmund, 1-0 winners in Stuttgart, while in France Lyon swept Rennes aside 4-0 and Celta put five past Santander.

The morning news comes almost entirely from the treatment room. The heaviest blow is Juventus's: Grabara tore his cruciate ligament in training and his season is over (Sky Sport, Corriere dello Sport); according to Gazzetta dello Sport the club is already scanning the list of free agents for a goalkeeper. Atalanta travel to Turin with an absence of their own, Kossounou ruled out by a muscle strain (ANSA), and Sarri dismissed any personal duel with the opposite bench: "against Juve it is not a match between Spalletti and me". In Udine, after three straight defeats, Calciomercato reports the club's first doubts about Kosta Runjaic and sporting director Inler's words ("everyone should reflect on their own mistakes"); at Napoli, NapoliCalcioNews.it notes that Anguissa is back in full training, with director Manna spelling out the club's stance on the midfielder's contract renewal on Dazn. From France comes news of a different kind: ANSA reports that the Psg president is under investigation for conflict of interest.

Today's schedule is packed. Serie A began at 12.30 with Fiorentina-Napoli at the Franchi, followed at 15.00 by Frosinone-Como and Parma-Genoa; the main courses come in the evening, Juventus-Atalanta at 18.00 and Milan-Lecce at 20.45. In LaLiga the Madrid derby between Atletico and Real kicks off at 16.15, with Valencia-Real Sociedad closing the day at 21.00. The Premier League serves up Bournemouth-Liverpool, Leeds-Crystal Palace and Manchester City-Sunderland at 16.00, then Fulham-Manchester United at 18.30. The Bundesliga has Leverkusen-Leipzig at 15.30, and at 20.45 the Velodrome hosts the Classique between Marseille and Psg (all times Italian).

A glance at the tables says the Italian league is wide open: Roma, Inter and Lazio are level on 13 points, Cagliari are right behind on 12 and Venezia are still without a point after five games. Elsewhere the picture is clearer: Barcelona have won all seven of their LaLiga matches, while in the Bundesliga Dortmund lead with a perfect 12 points to Bayern's 10. The oddest read is in Ligue 1, where Monaco top the table on 13: Psg sit ninth on 5 and Marseille fifteenth on 3. Tonight's Classique, then, is worth far more than its name suggests.
