Serie A wraps up Round 3, Real Madrid-Inter Tuesday

In Serie A, Monday brings the two late fixtures that close the third round. At the time of publication Cagliari-Lecce was still being played and not yet finished (live data had Cagliari 1-0 ahead), while Udinese-Lazio was set for 20:45: neither result was therefore final. No matches were scheduled today in the other major European leagues.

At the top of the table sit Roma and Inter, both on maximum points with 9 after three matchdays: Roma boast the best attack (10 goals) and the best defence (just one conceded), while Inter come off a 3-2 home win over Napoli. Behind them, on 7 points, is the trio of Como, Milan and Juventus, who on Saturday shared the spoils in a 1-1 head-to-head at the Allianz Stadium. Frosinone are a positive surprise on 6 points, while Fiorentina, Genoa and Venezia remain pointless at the bottom; Fiorentina, with nine goals conceded, are last.

The story of the day comes from Florence: according to reports from ANSA Calcio, bottom-placed and pointless Fiorentina have brought back Paolo Vanoli to succeed Grosso, handing him a second spell on the Viola bench. Also per ANSA, at Lazio Gennaro Gattuso spoke of a «frank relationship» with president Lotito.

In Europe, anticipation is building for the return of the Champions League. Ahead of Real Madrid-Inter, scheduled for Tuesday at 21:00, ANSA Calcio reports that Lautaro Martínez said Inter «have their own weapons» and are ready, while Kylian Mbappé acknowledged great respect for the opponent. England's Anthony Oliver has been appointed referee for the Bernabéu tie. At Atalanta, sporting director Giuntoli called the squad «competitive and improved», and Franck Kessié said he chose Bergamo «with his heart».

The evening fixture is still to be played: at 20:45 Udinese host Lazio. The hosts arrive on 4 points and Lazio on 6 with a game in hand and, with a win, could join the leaders on 9. As with Cagliari-Lecce, the outcome of Udinese-Lazio was not yet final at the time of publication.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 8 September, the Champions League returns with the first matchday of the league phase. At 18:45 Club Brugge-Aston Villa and AEK Athens-LASK get under way; at 21:00 the marquee slate features Real Madrid-Inter, Porto-Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund-Villarreal and Lille-Real Betis.
