Woltemade joins Juve: Spalletti's new No. 9 is official
On deadline day Juventus have made Nick Woltemade official, signed on loan from Newcastle. On the same day Jonathan David leaves Turin for Atletico Madrid.
The centre-forward had been the real puzzle of Juventus' summer. In the final hours of the window, after long sounding out profiles such as Sørloth and Zirkzee – as reported in recent days by Corriere dello Sport and Eurosport – Juventus turned decisively to Newcastle's Nick Woltemade.
The breakthrough came on the afternoon of September 1: Calciomercato.com announced that Woltemade is officially a new Juventus player, arriving from Newcastle on a paid loan. In the evening Gianluca Di Marzio listed the deal among the day's "Official Transfers", pointing to a season-long loan worth around €3.5 million.
The incoming move was tied to the exit that made room for it. Also on September 1, Calciomercato.com confirmed Jonathan David's transfer from Juventus to Atletico Madrid, on loan with an option: the Canadian leaves Turin and frees up the striker's slot that Woltemade now fills.
Juventus' day did not end there. According to Sportmediaset, the club had tried to work on several fronts until the last minute: contacts with Atalanta for Cabal, reported by Calciomercato.com, did not progress and the deal fell through in the afternoon.
In midfield the picture had already been completed in the morning: Sportmediaset had reported the official arrival of Pape Sarr from Tottenham, a deal worth around €30 million. With Sarr in the middle and Woltemade up front, Spalletti adds physicality and height to his attack.
The formal details and the exact length of the agreement with Newcastle still need clarifying: Di Marzio speaks of a season-long loan, while it remains to be seen whether a buy option is included. Either way, on the final day of the window Juventus hand Spalletti his new number nine.
